# Renewal and retries

> How your subscription renews by card and Pix, what happens when a charge fails, and how to subscribe again

Your subscription renews automatically every cycle. How that happens depends on the payment method: with a **credit card** we charge it for you; with **Pix** we send you a QR Code to pay.

## Credit card

On the due date we charge the card on file. If the charge is declined, we **automatically try again** instead of ending the subscription right away:

| Attempt | When |
| - | - |
| 1st | On the renewal due date |
| 2nd | 1 day after the 1st |
| 3rd | 2 days after the 2nd |
| 4th | 2 days after the 3rd |

* If any attempt succeeds, the renewal completes and the cycle continues as usual.
* If the **4th attempt fails**, the subscription is **ended** and the instance quota is **reset to zero**.
* After the first failure you get the [failed charge notice](/en/guide/billing-emails), with a link to [update your card](/en/guide/update-card). If the subscription ends, you get the termination email.

<Note>
  Attempts are run by a scheduler, so the exact time may vary slightly from the interval shown. Updating your card before the next attempt avoids termination: the new card is used for the following charges.
</Note>

## Pix

Pix has no automatic charge attempts. The flow is:

<Steps>
  <Step title="QR generated 5 days ahead">
    Five days before the due date we generate the renewal QR Code and email it to you, with the amount, the deadline and the Pix copy-and-paste code.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Payment">
    Once you pay, the renewal completes and the new cycle continues as usual.
  </Step>

  <Step title="3-day grace period">
    The QR is valid until the deadline shown in the email. If the due date passes without payment, the subscription is **not ended right away**: there is a **3-day grace period**. If the QR has expired by then, contact support.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Termination">
    If the grace period ends unpaid, the subscription is **ended** and the quota is **reset to zero**. Do not pay the QR after termination: the payment does not reactivate the subscription, so contact support.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## When a subscription is ended for non-payment

Automatic termination happens when all 4 card attempts fail or when the Pix is not paid within the grace period. In these cases:

* the subscription becomes **canceled** and **cannot be reactivated**;
* the instance quota is reset to zero;
* you receive a termination email telling you to subscribe again.

## Scheduled cancellation: reactivating

If **you** canceled the subscription, it stays as **Canceling** until the end of the period you already paid for. Until then you can click **Reactivate** under **My subscription** in the dashboard. Nothing is charged on reactivation and the cycle continues as usual.

## Subscribing again after termination

After an automatic termination, subscribe again: under **My subscription**, use **See plans** and complete the checkout. Each account has **one active subscription at a time**.

| Payment method | What happens when you subscribe again |
| - | - |
| Card | A new immediate charge on the card. |
| Pix | A new QR Code to pay. |

In both cases the **quota only comes back after payment**.
